Character Analysis: Chase Young (Xiaolin Showdown)

Character Analysis: Chase Young (Xiaolin Showdown)

Background

Chase Young was once a noble warrior, fighting on the side of good. He, along with Grand Master Dashi and Master Monk Guan, would face the evil forces from Wuya. However, like all good things, it must come to an end. Enter Hannibal Roy Bean, an evil Bean who would tempt Chase with his destiny. You see, Chase believed he was destined to be the greatest Warrior ever, a Xiaolin Dragon, but there was one man who stood in his way, Master Monk Guan. Hannibal Roy Bean would project a false testimonial from Guan suggesting that he would take that position from Chase, leaving him in his shadow. He then offered Chase the Lao Mang Lone Soup, a Soup that would keep Chase young forever, along with the boost he needed to reach the top. This ate away at Chase, and he began to think it over, until he decided it was time. He wanted to be the best, and in order to be the best, he would give up his soul for the Lao Mang Lone Soup and join the Heylins. He would soon be known as the greatest evil of all time.

On the Heylin Side, he would want but one thing: The World. He would stop at nothing to have it, and he needed a bit of assistance from a familiar monk… Omi. The two would form a sort of Student/Teacher Bond, where Chase would begin to teach Omi everything he knew. It would be strange to Omi, but Chase’s teachings had a purpose, he would be getting him ready for Evil. One day, he was able to trick Omi into joining his side thanks to the Ying Yo-Yo, causing Omi to leave his good-side in the Ying-Yang World. From here his plan would begin to realize. Omi would swear his loyalty and Chase would begin to rule the world, it would take the rest of the monks in a Xiaolin Showdown to win Omi’s freedom back. Defeated, he would let him go due to his honor, but this wouldn’t be their last encounter.

Flash forward to the future, Omi would gain the idea to prevent Chase from becoming evil, he would do this by getting the Sands Of Time and travelling to the past, stopping Hannibal Roy Bean’s plan, keeping Chase on the side of good… until it was shown that Hannibal would switch his plan up, offering the original deal to Master Monk Guan, he would take the Lao Mang Lone Soup and join the Heylins. This chain reaction would lead this timeline of monks to being captured, and in their imprisonment, Chase would realize something, he would need to be the one to drink the Soup, it would have to be him. To set the others free, and to help reset the timeline, Chase would drink from the Soup and turn evil once more. It is not the future he chose, but it is the future that must be… For The Greater Good.

Before We Begin…

This will be fairly straightforward, we will be using: The Show: Xiaolin Showdown, The Video Games, and all supplementary information from the Card Game… and that’s it!

Wait, I hear you going “But what about Chronicles?” and to that I say… I just don’t want to. Okay, it’s a little bit more than that, but I do these to have fun, and I just don’t like Chronicles, and I don’t want to subject myself to a show that I don’t like just for the sake of big number. I have problems with Chronicles even fitting in the show's timeline as well as its canonicity, so to avoid this headache, I elect to simply not include it. I think the original has more than enough material for a blog anyways, and I want to shine a light on this hidden gem of a show. If you truly want to know more about what Chronicles would bring to the table, essentially Chase turned into a Multiversal Dragon, got a few minutes of screentime in this form, and then he died.

Experience and Skill

Chase Young is considered the most skilled at Tai Chi, given that Chase Young has been alive for 1,500 Years, it’s no wonder he’s considered such a threat. At his core, he is a perfectionist, and will accept nothing but. At his peak, he can effortlessly defeat the Xiaolin Monks, nearly stalemate Master Monk Guan, and defeat Hannibal Roy Bean. In addition, Chase Young is a capable fighter, being able to fight Master Monk Guan for days on end without any signs of exhaustion.

Equipment

Abilities/Skills

Expert Martial Artist

Chase Young is an Expert Martial Artists, even before becoming immortal and joining the side of Evil, according to Jack Spicer, he is the world's most skilled master of Tai Chi, a martial art involving low-impact movements. With this knowledge, he knows several moves:

Transmutation

Had Master Monk Guan failed to beat Chase in his showdown, Chase would have turned him into a Jungle Cat, just like the rest of his fallen warriors. This is showcased when Chase turned Omi into a cat after he resigned to Chase due to him swearing his loyalty, even though he was forcibly evil at the time. Chase can change his army of Jungle Cats into warriors. Chase has been shown to be able to transmutate the elements, such as when he turned a small puddle into lava.

Shapeshifting

Chase can transform his body at will, specifically between his two forms, his Human Form, and his Dragon Form (For more info, see the Forms section)

Tiger Senses

Chase with his “Tiger Senses” can predict and block attacks all while his eyes are closed, such as the time he used it to deflect all of Omi’s attacks.

Teleportation

Chase Young can teleport himself to whichever location he wishes, though typically he tends to return to his lair. As seen above, Chase can teleport multiple users away, even souls like Wuya. He can also use this ability offensively, such as when he used it mid-fight to strike Master Fung

Illusion Creation

Chase Young can create illusions. He used this ability to demonstrate the abilities of the Golden Finger Shen Gong Wu.

Surface Scaling

Chase is able to stand on walls and run on the ceiling.

Elemental Manipulation

Chase can seemingly bend different elements, demonstrated in the many fights where he was able to redirect the monks elements.

  • Fire Manipulation - Chase was able to grab Kimiko’s fire and form it into a fireball, right before redirecting it
  • Wind Manipulation - He was able to grab Raimundo’s Typhoon Boom and shape it into a ball of wind, which he then redirected
  • Electricity Manipulation - Created a horizon spanning storm, and attacked the Xiaolin Temple with a giant thunderbolt

Non-Physical Interaction

Okay, this is gonna sound silly, but yes Chase Young was able to slap Wuya in a short gag moment, accompanied with a slap sound effect. Wuya, is of course, a spirit, so this little gag counts as Non-Physical Interaction. It helps that this is a consistent gag across multiple Wuya interactions.

Telekinesis

With a simple hand gesture, Chase was able to launch Jack into the mouths of one of his Jungle Cats, kinda like the force. This is shown again, when he used his magic to levitate Omi towards him, this time with a dark blue flame effect showcasing the ability. He can also alter and shift the area in which his Crystal Ball is focused on.

Power Nullification

When he restored Wuya’s body, he specifically prevented Wuya from her Heylin Magic, though the exact means are unknown, however this does get backed up as when he absorbed Omi’s powers, he left him without powers.

Memory Manipulation

After grabbing Dojo’s flames, he was able to use his Heylin Magic to create the “Heylin Memory Recall.” With this, he was able to make Omi remember the time he swore his loyalty to Chase Young, even though he was forcibly evil at the time.

Energy Projection

Chase can surround himself with his Heylin Magic, and shoot it out like an Energy Beam, like when he launched it out of his lair, destroying part of a mountain, and creating heavy winds. He did this just to Aura Farm.

Power Absorption

Chase was able to take Omi’s essence, and combine it with his own, allowing him to get stronger. Through this, he was able to take Omi’s “Dots”, leaving him without powers.

Clairvoyance

With his Heylin Magic, Chase was able to form a Crystal Ball-like Eye that was able to provide the whereabouts of the Xiaolin Monks, using this knowledge to slow down and stop the Monks during their quest to track down the Bird of Paradise. His bird can also provide a lens into his Crystal Ball

Reality Warping

Chase Young can warp reality to some degree, such as when he appeared above the Sky’s clouds. This is likely done through his Heylin Magic.

Necromancy

Chase Young can resurrect the dead, such as when he brought forward this dead Snake Monster to fight the Xiaolin Monks.

BFR and Portal Creation

After double-crossing Hannibal Roy Bean, Chase was able to create a portal to the Ying-Yang World and lock him in there for an eternity. This was done without the use of the Ying-Yang Yo-Yo.

Weapon Creation

Chase Young can materialize his Kwan-Dao Sword from nothing at any time. He used this in order to try and kill Hannibal Roy Bean who was disguised as Clay at the time.

Levitation

Chase Young can take flight by levitating. He can keep up with Jack’s Helibot

Forms

Dragon Form

Chase’s True Form. He can shapeshift his body between his human form and Dragon Form at will. This form provides a vague boost in power, and seemingly enhances his already skilled ability. In this form, he can use his tail to fight, providing more utility than his normal form. Chase tends to switch to this form in high-intense showdowns, such as when he faced Master Monk Guan, or when he was fighting to keep Omi’s loyalty.

 Support

Jungle Cats

An army of fallen orders that Chase Young had transformed into loyal Jungle Cats. They follow his every command, and are capable of contending with strong opponents, such as the Xiaolin Dragons. It has been shown that he has a rather large army of Jungle Cats. He can also transform them back into warriors, which seemingly provide them with a boost in power. In addition to turning them into Jungle Cats, they can turn into birds as well.

Resistances

Feats

Overall

Power

Durability

Speed

Scaling

Xiaolin Dragons

Chase Young has regularly tussled with the cast on many occasions. He is consistently a high level threat, and has shown on many occasions to be their superior. As a result, it’s clear that he scales to the Xiaolin Dragons.

Omi

Raimundo

  • This was technically in a dream sequence, however it was shown multiple times that the Dream Scape can interact with the Real World.

Kimiko

Clay

Misc

The Heylins

It’s very clear that Chase Young scales above your average Heylin, but no moment shows it more than the time where Chase Young defeated Jack Spicer, along with all of his allies. Given his general status, it’s clear he scales above all of their feats.

Wuya

In The Flesh…

It’s a bit tricky to say if Chase truly scales to Wuya, since when he brought her back to her physical form, he specifically prevented her from getting her powers back. He can still keep up with her in a fight however, and has faced foes who were supposedly the strongest yet, such as Hannibal Roy Bean and fared well.

  • A later shot confirms it was indeed the Sun

Shen Gong Wu

Chase consistently views Shen Gong Wu as nothing more than just trinkets, magical toys, and merely a crutch for true power. With this, as well as his own feats supporting these statements, it’s safe to say he scales above Shen Gong Wu.

  • The Eye of Dashi supposedly possesses a limitless supply of Energy

Weaknesses

Chase Young is a perfectionist at heart. He will accept nothing but being the best, in fact it was this line of thinking that got him tricked into joining the Heylin side in the first place. Chase also gets weakened during the Heylin Eclipse, rendering him powerless as his Jungle Cats also get put into a deep sleep. It’s unlikely that any Eclipse can cause this depowering, as it was specified as the “Heylin Eclipse.”

QnA

The Eye Of Dashi’s Lightning

As you probably noticed, there’s a lot of lightning dodging in the series, and it’s all thanks to one Shen Gong Wu: The Eye Of Dashi. But is this real lightning? Let’s talk about it. To start, Shen Gong Wu are described as magic various times, however this does not discount the lightning being real alone. Rather, elemental Shen Gong Wu have shown properties to that of their real counterpart, I.e: The Orb of Tornami shoots actual water, Star Hanabi shoots fire, Sword of the Storm can make storms, etc. If you’re an Undertale fan, this is going to sound familiar as it’s essentially the same argument, but given that other elements share the same properties as their respective element, the same should go for their speed, but in any case, our best piece of evidence is the time the Eye Of Dashi’s lightning shot at a cloud, and produced actual cloud to ground lightning. In addition, according to VS Battles Wiki, It is required to show that the electricity carries an energy of at least 1.6 billion Joules, thankfully the Eye of Dashi has that and then some, such as when it was able to generate enough energy to send Omi back in time 1500 years ago. With all this in mind, it’s safe to consider the Eye of Dashi’s lightning comparable to the real thing.

The Lunar Locket

This is fairly straightforward. The Lunar Locket can move the Moon. The Moon is very heavy, meaning moving it takes a lot of energy. Chase scales above Shen Gong Wu, boom easy. What I want to address however is the time the moon was moved in a Xiaolin Showdown. One quick look and you can probably tell what I want to talk about here. You see… the Moon is tiny in this shot! Oh boy it’s the DK Moon feat again. Anyways, given the moon is small in this shot, you might be quick to discount this feat on that alone, or at least not want to use real moon numbers for it. For quick clarification, this is specifically for this scene alone, other Lunar Locket feats don’t have this issue. Anyways, due to the nature of this show, being not a “toony” show like something like Ed, Edd, N Eddy, we can’t just brush it off as cartoon shenanigans, but given it has not shown this problem in other feats, it’s just a case of Your Mileage May Vary. As a result, due to this specific Moon moving moment having the highest number of all our feats in Xiaolin Showdown, I am electing to give it a “Possibly” rating.

The Shard Of Lightning

The Shard of Lightning allows the user to travel at the speed of Light for short durations. I bring up this Wu because of a very specific scene where Jack uses it and everyone appears frozen, allowing him to blitz everyone. Does this scene disqualify all feats within the FTL range? Not on its own. You see, if there were multiple examples that consistently shows the cast being blitzed by Speed of Light travel, we might have a case here, however the Shard of Lightning only gets used in its introduction episode. There are actually more examples of the cast being able to keep up within relativistic speeds to FTL speeds than the opposite. To start, the Lunar Locket moving the moon at its peak reaches 0.42 c, fairly high into relativistic. There’s the time where Omi traveled through a wire with the Denshi Bunny, which is roughly 90% the Speed of Light. There are several potential laser dodges as well, though this is debatable if they are actual lasers, and best of all, Wuya’s Heylin Magic was able to reach the Sun in seconds, reaching 299 times faster than light. This isn’t some outlier either, magic in the verse can warp reality so fast that during the activation of a Xiaolin Showdown, it can launch the arena well past our galaxy in seconds. Given that both Omi and Jack can dodge Wuya’s magic, suggests that they can indeed react in the FTL range. Heck, even in its own episode, Master Fung can perceive the monks' mid usage, so I don’t think the Metro Man-like scene on its own discredits any high-end speed feats.

Various Planet Level Statements

“Is it me, or does the fate of the world rest with us a lot?”

So, as you have probably noticed, there are a lot of statements that if we take seriously, are about Planet Level, so how valid are these statements? Surprisingly, I reckon they are fairly reliable. You see, whenever Xiaolin Showdown says something, they clearly mean it, as proven by Chase Young having one of the most blatant Planet Level feats out there. This is backed up quite a lot. Wuya’s conquest immediately starts with her causing an eclipse, we have a visual presentation of what would happen to the Earth if Mythical Spiders were allowed to roam the Earth. Even for the ones that don’t have visual proof of things like Dojo threatening the Earth, we have high tier characters like Wuya being afraid of his freedom, adding some credibility. With this, and given we have actual feats within this range, we can safely say these statements are actually valid.

Universal Xiaolin Showdown?

Ah… After that deep dive we can solidly say Xiaolin Showdown is solidly Large Planet Level with potential for Brown Dwarf level… what do you mean there’s a potential Universal feat?

Ok, so let’s discuss what's going on here. In order to fix the timeline, Omi and the rest of the Monks prevent past Omi from time traveling to the future by unfreezing him, this results in the two Omi’s seeing each other and touching each other. In classic paradox fashion, upon touching, they begin to warp space time. According to Raimundo “Two parallel universes running into each other in a cosmic timeline continuum pileup” This event was clearly destructive in nature, as we saw the timelines merging into a ball of mass and exploding like the Big Bang. After exploding, it’s clear what happened clearly did, with all four monks remembering the event, and even Jack Spicer appearing given he was present for the event. So, is everyone who was part of this event Universal?

Unfortunately we don’t know enough to say for certain. It’s clear that the monks experienced this event, but for all we know, they died in the explosion and their experiences were transferred onto the restored timeline, so maybe some time of time based immunity or ability. It’s safer to discard this feat based on how little we know and potential factors affecting it.

Summary

Potential Matchups

Tai Lung

(TNs By Me)

(Chase Young Render By Skyrawathi)

I think this is both of their bests. To simplify the connections: two Martial Artists who were both on the side of good initially, they both trained with the purpose of fulfilling their destiny, becoming the chosen Dragon (The Dragon Warrior and the Xiaolin Dragon respectively), only to be ultimately denied, (Tai Lung was not chosen as the Dragon Warrior. Chase Young would join the Heylins after being tricked) ultimately joining the side of Evil (Tai Lung’s rage of not being chosen, only being amplified after being locked up. Chase Young drinking the Lao Mang Lone Soup, which would turn him evil). Despite the clear difference in power, we can focus on their Martial Arts for this matchup, and this would be an easy episode to portray as a street level fight.

Closing Thoughts

After many scrapped ideas, I finally got another blog out. I hope this puts a few more eyes on a series I always considered underrated. Time for my thoughts. I’ve had this one planned for a while, but not in the form you currently see. Initially I was gonna do a “Series Analysis” where I was going to look at everything for every notable character. My line of thinking was due to the nature of the Shen Gong Wu, there’s so many, I just wanted to talk about them all, including people’s unique abilities… I very quickly realized I was in over my head. Yeah, such an idea is simply not something I could manage.

So after a while, I switched to Chase Young. You may think, why Chase Young? The guy who refuses to use Shen Gong Wu, one of the major aspects of the show? I would love to talk about Shen Gong Wu, but ultimately I decided on Chase for a few reasons. 1. He’s pretty damn cool. 2. He scales above just about everyone, so by doing him, I’ll be doing a deep dive on the show's stats in general. 3. I wanted this blog to be a bit on the simpler side, so Chase felt like a good pick of being simple to cover, but having enough material to provide meaningful things to talk about. That’s about it.

Till Next Time, whatever it may be.
